words of today’s topic, “Thy

There must be a king. He must be

THE REV. A. W. JACKSON

We shall stress and discuss four
topics : viz.
(1). A Dichotomic World
(2) A Dichotomic Man
(3) A Dichotomic Christ
(4) A Dichotomic Church.
My first task is to explain or the
term Dichotomic, or tell what the Sub-
ject of Dichotomy imbraces or means.
The English word dichotomy comes
from the Greek term dikotomos, a
Greek noun derived from the Greek
verb, dikotomao, meaning I cut or di-
vide into two parts, or pairs or divisions,
Now the Greek adjective is dikotomea
from whence we get the English word
dichotomic, meaning appertaining to
two parts or divisions.
Now we think we have well defined
the terms dichotomy and dichotomic,

a loud but not musical voice. One
Sunday morning, while the preacher
was delivering the sermon, the mule
persisted in putting his head through
the window and braying loudly.

The preacher finally said: “Bredernt

quadrennium. But some of them were
there. It would be difficult to forget
Bishop Sim’s great sermon that opened
the session. I quote one of his signi-
ficant utterances: “God’s first thought
is about persons. He evaluates the
person above the institution.’

There has developed in our Method-
ism a tendency to exalt the church as
an institution above the individual. We
seem disposed to take care of the work
at any cost. The utter failure to
evidence even due regard for the super-
annuate, the conference widow and
orphans is striking illustration. “God
buries the workmen, but the work goes
on,” we say. We fully agree. But
God buries no man alive. The marvel-
ous fact of human redemption lies
founded on a love that will not let us
go. The Peter who had gone fishing
was the same Peter who became the
rock upon which the Christian Church
was founded.

Bishop Abraham Grant was a great
evangelistic spirit. One of his minis-
ters seemed done for. He was down
for the last count. The bishop sent
for him. He took the time to counsel
with him in the quietude of his study
He admonished him of threatening
failure. Then the bishop kneeled with
this weak, failing minister, praying un-
til a flood of tears streamed down

must pass through the grave and sheol,
but as God, both the grave and sheol
Must release him on the third day
morning, Thus, it is clear man is
dichotomic.

We now proceed to prove that Christ
is dichotomic as well as theanthropic.

A DICHOTOMIC CHRIST

Christ is compelled to be dichotomic,
because he is made like unto his breth-
ren, this is the statement made by
Moses and also by the apostle Paul.
Christ is very man and very God. Thus,
being a man, he must be dichotomic to
live in and redeem a dichotomic world
and a dichotomic man; Christ is made
to suit the world and man he came to
redeem.

Christ is not only dichotomic, but is
theanthropic as well, and must needs be
to be able to redeem man. Christ is
the God-man nothing less or more
could redeem a lost world, one moment
he is man asleep on the ship and the
next moment he is a God lulling the
waves and winds to sleep as a mother
would lui her babe, He is none other
than both the theanthropic and dichot-
omic Christ of the world.

Having proven Christ to be dichot-
omic, we now proceed to the dichotomic
church which he established.

A DICHOTOMIC CHURCH

The church is as dichotomic as the
world and the man, and the Christ who
established it. Christ built the church
to suit the world and man he had
come to redeem. Thus, the church
must needs be composed of temporal
and spiritual things, it is both spiritual
and temporal, like its founder.

Though the church is dichotomic the
spiritual side is infinitely greater and
more important than the temporal and
the spiritual has priority over the tem_
poral, “First seek the kingdom and its
righteousness is the command of the
Christ.” But these latter day saints

We are happy to say this task of

kingdom building is still a pleasure,
and we feel that we are gaining ground
for the Master. We have in our church
two clubs newly set up >to work for
the good of the church; namely, first
the Lucy M. Hughes Club—This club
works for the trustees; The Eastside
Workers Club—This club works for
the stewards. These clubs though young,
are beginning to do their work. We
have raised this quarter $61.89. We also
raisel $1.30 for General Claims.

Brother N. E. Turner was elected
to represent the church at our Dis-
trict Conference in June, 1940. We feel
with the return of our Pastor and Pre-
siding Elder, that the future holds
great things for us.

At 7:30 p. m. the regular devotional
was conducted by the Pastor. Opening

presented the P. E., who preached to
us from St, Luke 2:14. He’ stressed
the idea of looking for Christ, and
extending good will and glad- tidings
to all men. Dr. Fleming preached a
wonderful and strong sermon. It was-
enjoyed by all. We had present with
