KEWANEE, ILLINOIS

Our First Quarterly Meeting was held
Sunday, December eighteenth. Our
Presiding Elder, Dr. S. R. Maguinez
came to us at the evening service at
which time he delivered a masterful ser-
mon using for his text John 6:68, “Then
Simon Peter answered him Lord to
whom shall we go thou hast the words
of eternal life.”

Every one present expressed being
pleased.

Little Howard Leslie Wright, Jr.
aged four months was christened by
Presiding Elder assisted by the pastor,
after which the Holy Communion was
administered. Monday evening at
eight o'clock the pastor led a short de-
yotional service after which the Pre-
siding Elder called to order the business
session of the Conference. Miss Tessie
Jean Lundia was elected secretary. All
ports showed an increase. Formerly
Bethel was. in the South District but
during the last Annual Conference it
was placed in the West Chicago Dis-
trict, therefore the Presiding Elder and
pastor are new to this charge but they
are looking forward to a successful
year. The Presiding Elder, pastor and
regation are well pleased with the
progress made thus far. Total amount
raised this quarter $293.00.

cor

Let us pray that this will be a great;

year. The pastor and wife are very
appreciative to the members of Bethel
and friends of Kewanee for kindness
tendered them since their arrival here
in October.

REVERSING THE ORDER

An old pastor was told by his officials
that the reason the offerings were so
small was that he preached too long and
the people were so bored they wouldn’t
contribute. The next Sunday the pas-
tor announced:

“Hereafter, the offering will be taken
before the sermon, and the bigger the
offering the smaller the sermon; the
smaller the offering the longer the ser-
mon. The congregation will iecide as
to the length of the sermon.”

QUARTERLY CONFERENCE AT
BETHEL A.M.E. CHURCH
Albany, Ga.

Friday, November 25 at 8 o'clock
p.m. Rev. W. D. Johnson, Presiding
Elder of the Albany District of the
Americus, Ga. Conference called to
order and opened the conference. The
pastor, Rev. A. R. Cooper and a
splendid gathering of officers, members
and friends were present.

After devotion and organization, the
Elder proceeded with the disciplinary
questions. Some very interesting facts
were brought out. The church -was
shown to be in excellent condition. 5
members have been added, indebtedness
for trustees $45.00 counter balanced
by $50.00 in the treasury. All auxil-
jaries made good showings. With a
spiritually alive church in excess of
$600 raised for all purposes this quar-
ter, Elder Johnson expressed himself
as being pleased with the work.

On Sunday following, Dr. Johnson
preached two powerful sermons, me-
morialized three lost members, obligated
the officers and gave us helpful ad-
vice. We were all elated.

It marked the beginning of the fifth
year’s service at Bethel for Rev.
Cooper. He too was proud and happy
for in his four years’ stay he has added
about 150 members to the church, raised
a sum in excess of $12,000 and has the

-good will of his congregation and the
town’s people.

While here he has been in demand as
a public speaker filling engagements
that do credit to the best that the race.
has to offer.

Side by side with him his wife and
family have labored for the success of
the work.

Dr. Cooper is a product of Morris
Brown College and is backed by the
experience of a well trained father who
was of veteran minister of the gospel.
I refer to the late Dr. A. Cooper; also
he has years of experience as a min-
ister and blessed with a plenty of native
aptitude. :

His aspiration is to become a bishop
and on his record of service and ex-,
perience he has the endorsement of
his congregation, his conference and
the church in Georgia.

—wW. D. Brown

their masterly addresses. The spiritual
side of the Conference was par ex-
cellent throughout the session.

At the eleven o’clock service brought
to a close the best session in the his-

Saturday night the Presiding Elder,
Rev. E. E. Moody, came and attendéd
to the business of the Conference. This
meeting was carried out in a very order-
ly way.

The church was very, very sorry to
report two deaths. The deceased were
