CHRISTMAS CAROLS—

Warm things I've loved
In winter cold,

My blossoming plants,
The firelight gold.

The story of the shepherds on
the hillsides of Galilee and of the
wise men who journeyed to the
little town of Bethlehem seeking
the Christ Child, is being sung
and recited in elaborate pageantry
throughout Christendom. But the
spirit that prevails in the world
today is neither comforting nor
hopeful. Hate, envy, cupidity
have dimmed our hope of spiritual
regeneration and moral redemp-
tion. Racial strife, inhuman per-
secution have all caused the light
of brothererly love to flicker fee-
bly on the altar of civilization.
The world has lost faith in those
ancient ideals that fired the souls
of the prophets of old. The poor,
the meek in heart have drained to
the dregs the cup of sorrow and
have been kneeling for sometime,

Teakettle hum,
The kitten’s purr,
And the spicy scent
Of a branch of fir,

Old books that open
Wide the door
To folk well known

And loved before;

beaten, penitent, before high
priests who are devoid of the
attributes of justice, love and
compassion, The church, with its
mysticism aiid rituals, has failed
in its mission.

It has failed because, contrary
to its professed dogmas, it has
allied itself with those militant
forces that seek to abort social
justice. Catholics and Protestants
alike have shown a shocking in-
difference to the moral wrongs
committed by the strong against
the weak and the poor. The in-
vasion of Ethiopia, the dismem-
berment of Czechoslovakia, the
slaughtering of Spanish women
and children, the strangulation of
the Chinese and the persecution
of the Jews have evoked no con-
sistent, articulate outcry from the
church.

“Peace and goodwill to all men”
has become a hollow, meaningless
injunction. The hymn of hate
echoes above the strains of the
Cathedral’s pipe-organ while a
confused, -bewildered and _ horri-
fied humanity seeks shelter in
caves, in mountain holes to escape
deadly projectiles dropped from
the air by devout Catholics. The
world is in agony. Mankind is
bleeding. A church that con-
dones lynching, segregation and
persecution cannot give requisite
proof of its own piety, nor can it
consistently influence peace and
goodwill among all men. There
can be neither peace, nor joy, nor
goodwill until we are lifted to-
ward the light of democracy, to-
ward social justice for all irrespec-
tive of color, race or creed.

The divinity of Christ was made
manifest in the humanity of Je-
sus. In the midst of grief, de-
spair and sorrow unless the
church fights openly for the rights
of the masses, peace and goodwill
there may be, but it will be peace
for the dead and goodwill for the
unborn. ‘ Hie:

RESEMBLANCE

Lord, make me something like my dad;

Give me a little of his will,

That good old stubbornness he had
That helped him up hte hardest hill,

Content to wait and work and fight,
Believing always he was right.

Lord, make me like my mother, too;
Give me a little of her song;

She laughed at life, and saw it through,
And never clung to sorrow long,

Yet watched a thousand islands fade
For every port she ever made.

Lord, make me strong and make me glad
* With hands to work and hearts to sing
In all my labor like my dad.
And yet like her in everything—
With changeless smile and changeless
oath,
Lord, make me something like them
both.

Subscription Campaign Now On

VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE BISHOP

As never before the CHRISTIAN RECORDER needs your support.
The present Editor and Manager has assumed a great responsibility.
He must pay for printing, wrapping, wraps, electric current, mailing,
bauling, postage, telephone, clerical help, rent for two rooms in the
Allen Building, office equipment, service for cuts, insurance, and inci-
dentals. We took over “without a dime,” but like Payne, with faith
in God. We thank the Bishops, brethren and sisters who have stood by.

The conference season will soon be over. Under the law Allen
Day as usually observed will mean nothing now to the CHRISTIAN
RECORDER. Before the off-season comes we call upon loyal African
Methodists all over the connection to help us in a church-wide sub-
scription campaign. Do you love your church a dollar's worth? Sub-
scribe, Subscribe! Get your friends, and neighbors to subscribe! Take
an offering in your church for so many subscriptions and boost your
Bishop. Prove your love for him. The connection wants to know
