imprisoned often for his work in India.
For in his. home country he was one
of the proponents of home rule for
India. He was one of the leading
figures in the All-India Congress of
natives. He led a boycott of English
goods and institutions.

In 1922 he was arrested and sent to
prison for six years. But he was re
leased after two years and in 1930 led
the revolt against the salt tax. Once

he soon found his way back to jail in
1932 for civil disobedience.

But, remarkably, his treatment in
Africa did not embitter him. To the
contrary, when the Boer War broke
out, he did notable volunteer hospital
work for the British. Again, later,
when the British arranged a round-
table conference to settle Indian prob-
lems, Gandhi attended.

Heeding his preaching of resistance
with “nonviolence,” thousands of his:
followers have humbly submitted to
police charges with clubs without rais-
ing a hand in defense.

He has lived to see part of his dream
come true. The British Parliament
has passed laws which give the Indian
provinces some measure of home rule.
If successful, the British envision a
large measure of home rule for the
whole of India. The Indian Congress
adherents won the Governments in
Bombay, Madras, Bihar, Orissa, the
Central Provinces the United Provinces
and the Northwestern Frontier.

Although Gandhi no longer holds
‘fice in the All-Indian Congress, they
‘ook to him for guidance and advice.
Only a few months ago the India

Provinces resigned. They did so at a
nod from Gandhi. They had urged the
freedom of certain political prisoners.

By Associated Press -

WASHINGTON — The American
Physical Society heard today of a meth
od of making “invisible glass”—the
second announced in two days. i

It was described by Dr. C. Hawley
Cartwrignt, a physicist at Massa
chusetts Institute of Theology, who de-
veloped it jointly with a colleague, Dr.
Arthur F. Turner. yeh aoe

Cartwright’s announcement was made
at the Physical Society meeting here
only 24 hours after the General Electric
Company at Schenectady, N. Y., dis-
closed that two of its scientists had dis_
covered as way to make glass “inyisi-
ble.” t

_ Reflection Eliminated

~ Both the M. I. T. and the General
Electric researchers did the same thing
—each found that by spreading an ex-
tremely thin film over the surfare of a
piece of clear class, the reflection from
the glass itself could be almost entirely
eliminated. ez fea

The M. I. T. experiments made their
film from sodium or aluminum fluoride.
This compound was heated until gas
was generated, and the gas was allowed
to settle on a glass plate. The film so

inch thick and was itself invisible, yet
it had the effect of eliminating most of
the reflection from the glass.

KEWANEE, ILLINOIS

Our First Quarterly Meeting was held
Sunday, December eighteenth. Our
Presiding Elder, Dr. S. R. Maguinez
came to us at the evening service at
which time he delivered a masterful ser-
mon using for his text John 6:68, “Then
Simon Peter answered him Lord to
whom shall we go thou hast the words
of eternal life.”

Every one present expressed being
pleased.

Little Howard Leslie Wright, Jr.
aged four months was christened by
Presiding Elder assisted by the pastor,
after which the Holy Communion was
administered. Monday evening at
eight o'clock the pastor led a short de-
yotional service after which the Pre-
siding Elder called to order the business
session of the Conference. Miss Tessie
Jean Lundia was elected secretary. All
ports showed an increase. Formerly
Bethel was. in the South District but
during the last Annual Conference it
was placed in the West Chicago Dis-
trict, therefore the Presiding Elder and
pastor are new to this charge but they
are looking forward to a successful
year. The Presiding Elder, pastor and
regation are well pleased with the
progress made thus far. Total amount
raised this quarter $293.00.

cor

Let us pray that this will be a great;

year. The pastor and wife are very
appreciative to the members of Bethel
and friends of Kewanee for kindness
tendered them since their arrival here
