Thursday Morning

The song and praise service prior
to the regulation session was con-

burden and heat of the day. The

STATE OF MICHIGAN

EXECUTIVE OFFICE

Lansing

The plan to hold an exhibition de
voted to 75 years of Negro freedom and
progress in Detroit in 1940 meets witk
my full and unqualified approval.
No fair-minded American who sin-
cerely believes in the fundamental prin-
ciples of our nation-freedom and equal
opportunity—can deny that the forward
strides made by the Negro since eman-
cipation are among the most eloquent
examples of what can be accomplished
in a free and liberal country.
His record is all the more inspiring
because it has been achieved in the face
of the obstacles born of racial differ-
ences. For although as a nation we
are devoted to the ideal of freedom and
liberty for all regardless of
creed, we still have among us forms of
discrimination and some denial of liber-
ties. In time these will be lessened and
we May have hope that they will event-
ually be eliminated, so that the Negro
may enjoy the fullest realization of his
heritage under the American system.

race or

It is entirely desirable that an at-
tempt be made to depict graphically
some of his accomplishments in the
many varied fields in which the Negro
is active. Such an exhibition would un-
doubtedly be a revelation to many, and
I am particularly glad that it is to be
held in the City of Detroit, the metro-
polis of our great State of Mi
which has been, and T am

‘As I read the daily and weekly
papers and then turn prayerfully and
meditatively to my Bible, I am thinking
we ate passing through an era of
world wide COVETOUSNESS. From
the daily this arch criminal, and
‘enemy to progress, happiness, fellow-
ship and brotherly love entered the
affairs of the human family he has so
completely covered his slimy tracks
that, in this day it is difficult for men
to understand and appreciate the enor-
mity of its crime. What does it
mean to be COVETOUS? It means

to have and indulge in an inordinate

desire to possess that which -belongs
another. Covetousness creates a
‘ongful desire for gain, a determina-

but today, a great change has come

Spain, Japan, China, the countries of
the far east, even Jerusalem, the
Cradle of the Christian Religion,
all are engaged in war here in
our home land, there is an eco-
nomic, industrial and political war.
It is as much impossible for us as
Christians to live in such an environ-
ment and escape its influence, this
rampant, slimy, snarling universial
spirit of wickedness as it is to live in
this world and escape the effect of
the rays of the sun. . This is an age
that is “Gun shie” with SELFISH-
NESS, and there is but. one remedy
given in Holy Writ, Jesus Christ. I
am thinking, are we really Christians?
I am thinking, does the spirit of the
COLONIAL fathers and the founders
of the Christian church possess us? I
